Ride snacks Greek-style (and Naxos-style)

Snacks for cycling

Coconut-sugar, "Farma" sesame-honey bar, "Jannis" sesame-honey bar, almond sweet

You won't find the typical cycling power bars and gels in shops on Naxos. You could bring yourself the supply that you need, or you could try to power yourself with greek-style (and naxos-style) ride snacks. Here are some of my choices.

On the left we have a coconut-sugar roll (or stick) "karyda". It's soft, easy to eat while riding. It is sweet, but due to the coconut it's not all sugar, "only" 56.2%. 60 grams give you 260 calories according to the packaging. I get these at any regular super market. It seems that only me and little kids ever buy them.

Pasteli - the standard

Next is a sesame-honey bar, something that in Greek is called a "pasteli". This one is from the "Farma" brand, certified organic. Usually these sesame-honey bars are quite hard and crispy. Some people might like that, but I find it unpractical when out riding, there's a lot of crunching and chewing involved. This one is soft, it tastes more like honey than most. It's easy to eat too, and for a while you have something to do afterwards while you ride: find all the sesame seeds in your mouth. 30 grams get you 163 calories.

Then we have another variation of "pasteli" sesame-honey bar, from the "Jannis" brand. This one isn't organic. Also this brand has lots and lots of pasteli-style products, this one is the only one that is soft and has the right size. The taste is a bit more "sesamy" than "honey" compared to the other one. It's also 30 grams and gets you 169 calories.

These "pasteli" sesame-honey bars are popular with hikers and other outdoor sports people in Greece too. They are the main go-to snack that I take with me on my rides. They are sweet (quick energy), but not too sweet. The sesame seems to give a longer boost than just the sugary parts would give.

I get my "pastelia" at various super markets in Naxos town, depending on who has my preferred two variations in stock any given day. Sometimes it's a bit of a searching game.

Naxos style power gel

Then we come to the naxos-style quick energy power gel: This is a little almond sweet of a kind typical for Greek islands, an "amigdaloto". It's basically almonds and sugar, some rose water, and powdered sugar around it. It's similar to german "Marzipan", but more coarse. I could do without the powdered sugar around it - occasionally I have removed that and repackaged these little calorie-bombs. I don't know how much they each weight, and have no clue about the calorie content.

I use these almond sweets for two things only: When I need more "instant" power before a hard effort or "last big push" on a ride. Or when someone (me or another rider) is in a bonk- or near-bonk-state. They give a quick sugar energy boost, but due to the almond, it's not just all a straw fire. (These things are also really tasty, ah well.) I do not take one of these on every ride.

These "amigdalota" sweets are from the "Aktaion" pastry shop in Naxos town. People buy them to take as gifts to friends, except me, I just buy them to eat them.
